7 1 2011 Scratchart Raccoon done

Size: 8x10"

Ampersand Clay Board

This week I finished this cute raccoon designed by Shelley Prior (with slight modifications by me) I love Scratch Art - it's SO much fun!

Scratchart is done on a Clayboard. It is masonite with a layer of kaolin white clay sprayed on in an even coat. Then Black India ink is sprayed on to have a very smooth surface.

Then you use x-acto knives and other scratching tools like tatoo needles to scratch away the black and leave the white. Depending on how much scratching is done, areas of light and shadow can be developed. It takes a little practice but I love doing this. I think the effect of black and white is so striking.
